The Mediterranean diet/lifestyle for a healthy and enjoying YOU.
Imagine a life full of sunshine and the gentle breeze of the Mediterranean, where health and well-being are central. That’s the magic of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Discover the simple changes of the Mediterranean diet in your daily life and how they can contribute to a longer life and better health. Did you know that in Liguria, people live even older than elsewhere in Europe, where 3 out of every 100,000 people reach the age of 105?
It’s no secret that Mediterranean countries are known for their delicious cuisine and relaxed lifestyle. But did you know that this lifestyle is also related to lower mortality rates and reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes? The Mediterranean lifestyle goes beyond just the Mediterranean diet; it is a holistic approach to life.
The basics of the Mediterranean lifestyle:
1. The Secret: The Mediterranean Diet
You sit at a table surrounded by the soft sunlight and the sound of the Mediterranean Sea in the background. That is the true essence of the Mediterranean diet, not just a way of eating but a lifestyle brimming with flavor and pleasure. Rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, olive oil, nuts, fish (and moderate amounts of red wine), this diet is known for its many health benefits.
In addition, Italians take their time at lunch. They consider a sandwich a “snack,” not lunch. Lunch here is an elaborate meal; it is the highlight of the day, a time to relax and enjoy pure food prepared with love.
In Mediterranean cuisine, you won’t encounter artificial flavor enhancers. Everything is pure and natural. Lemon is widely used in Mediterranean cuisine and herbs are picked fresh, to add not only flavor but also a touch of freshness to dishes. And the fish? It does not come from the freezer but straight from the Mediterranean, caught the same day. There are no ready-made meals here. Mediterranean cuisine is a cuisine of dedication. We take the time to cook, to fuse the flavors into a symphony that makes your taste buds jubilate.
But that’s not all. Our lifestyle is enhanced by the wonderful climate that allows us to live outside a lot. And we are very lucky to have a micro-climate in Balzi Rossi. For example, we still have lunch outside at Christmas. Outdoor dinners are not only common here; they are a must. Whether on a terrace overlooking the sea or in the shade of an olive tree, eating outside is a celebration of the good life.
2 Sunshine state of mind: the Mediterranean climate.
The Mediterranean climate contributes to your overall well-being. The abundant sunshine not only enriches your vitamin D levels, but also brings a sense of joy and vitality. It invites outdoor activities, making exercise a natural part of daily life. Ventimiglia’s microclimate means the area enjoys more sunshine compared to surrounding regions, thanks to geographical features and sheltered valleys that retain the sun’s heat. As we speak, today(Dec. 3, 2023) again at Balzi Rossi we saw people sunbathing in their bikinis!
3. Dive in: swim in the lovely azure waters
Swimming in the azure waters of the Mediterranean is not only refreshing; it can have a relaxing effect and reduce stress. The sea water contains minerals that can be beneficial to the skin, such as magnesium and salt. Some people experience an improvement in skin conditions such as eczema after swimming in seawater. If you are in Balzi Rossi in the winter, check how often you see elderly people swimming. And not just dipping, but you’ll see them just swimming laps for 15 minutes!
4. Sip, Sip, Hooray: red wine
Red wine, drunk in moderation, is an established part of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Studies suggest that moderate wine consumption can contribute to a longer life and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. A toast to health and enjoyment. Liguria produces more white wines such as Vermentino and Pigato but in the famous village of Dolce Aqua they make a delicious Rossese di Dolceaqua. A wine made from the Rossese grape with lively acids, light tannins and aromas of red fruit. Are you a true red wine lover? At Balzi Rossi we have an extensive collection of Barolo from one of the best wineries in Piedmont, Rocche dei Manzoni.
5. Lunch is king: the most important meal of the day
In Mediterranean culture, lunch is considered the most important meal of the day. Lunch is more than just a meal; it is an opportunity for social gathering. Italians value sharing meals with family, friends or colleagues. It is a time to relax, talk and strengthen ties with others. Did you know that here it is tradition to have lunch with friends and family for hours on Sundays? If you want to have lunch at a local restaurant on Sunday during your vacation, make your reservations early.
6. Fresh on your plate: fish and vegetables Rule the Kitchen
In Mediterranean cuisine, fresh fish and vegetables play the main role. Fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, is good for the heart, and vegetables provide many antioxidants. This simple but tasty combination makes every meal a delight for the senses. On Saturday mornings you can buy fresh fish at the port of San Remo. But there is also a good fish store in the “red market” in Ventimiglia. These are our top picks:
- Polpo (squid) is a common delicacy in Mediterranean cuisine, including Ventimiglia. It is often grilled, stewed or incorporated into salads.
- Spada (swordfish) is a firm fish with a mild flavor and is often served grilled or fried.
- Branzino (sea bass) is a popular white fish in Mediterranean cuisine.
- Gamberi Rosso di San Remo (red shrimp) are a real delicacy. They are mainly served raw or lightly cooked. The price is high but the taste fantastic.
7. No more stress: sun, sea and beach
In the Mediterranean lifestyle, with sun, sea and beach for relaxation, they know no stress there. Italians often go to the beach, work until 2 p.m. in summer and then relax. Long, cozy meals with family, relaxing and nature all help reduce stress. If they don’t have time or don’t feel like doing a job, they puff you off with “Domani” (tomorrow). And right they are, tomorrow is another day!
8. Good vibes only: social contacts
For Italians, family is super important. Not only the family you grow up with, but also your friends and social contacts. This strong network of people around you not only helps you live longer, but also helps you be happier. Eating together, partying and supporting each other in good and not so good times is an essential part of Italian life and makes life complete.
In essence, the Mediterranean lifestyle is much more than just a way of life; it is a promise of health and happiness!
